File Transfer is a generic term used to define the process of moving files or data from one computer to another over a network, such as the Internet.
There are many technical methods that have been developed for sending data, and these technical methods are referred to as File Transfer Protocols. It is these protocols that define exactly how the data is transferred over a network. Examples of file transfer protocols include:

HTTPS (combination of HTTP and a secure protocol such as SSL or TLS)
