LAN (Local Area Network)
LAN is the abbreviation used to describe a Local Area Network. The term “Local Area Network” refers to a computer network that covers a small physical area, usually confined to one building or a small group of buildings e.g. a home network or a business network.
A LAN is usually implemented to connect local workstations, servers and devices. This enables documents held on individual computers and servers to be accessed by any workstation within the LAN network. It also allows devices such as printers to be shared between workstations.
As a LAN includes a group of devices within a close proximity, they are usually able to transmit data at a fast rate as compared to Wide Area Networks. They are also relatively inexpensive to set-up as they use hardware such as Ethernet cables, network adaptors and hubs.
