The purpose of the publishers Picture Desk is to select the best pictures they receive for use in their publications. Whilst this sounds a relatively straight forward process Picture Desks receive a lot of images. When I say a lot of images in some cases that can mean millions of images a year and its the Picture Desk staff that have the task of sifting through them to select the right images for the publication.
Picture Desks can be considerably different environments depending upon how time critical the publications are, for example newspapers and weekly magazines need up to the minute images of sporting icons, celebrities and news to help them sell papers/magazines and advertising space.
Pro2col has helped a number of publishers streamline their Picture Desk workflow with the implementation of a Hermstedt StingRay file transfer server. StingRay is a multi-protocol file transfer server enabling Picture Desks to provide staff photographers, photo agencies and the paparazzi a variety of methods of sending their images to the publisher.
In one instance a publisher was receiving in excess of 4 million images per year. By implementing StingRay into their workflow the receipt of the images could be centralised for FTP, Email and ISDN for their legacy and reporters in the field. By centralising the receipt of the images StingRay was able to forward them directly into the Picture Desk asset management system with files from specific clients forwarded to specific workflows. Email notification of the receipt of the files was also provided automatically with a file manifest sent back to the submitting photographer. 
The return on investment generated by implementing StingRay into a Picture Desk workflow can be considerable. By centralising and consolidating disparate systems and automating some manual processes payback can be as little as 4 months.
