PDF metadata more accessible with Callas

02/10/2008

In its strategy to continuously extend the capabilities of PDF in print production and document management environments, callas software announces an innovative way to view, manage and extract all metadata embedded in PDF files.

callas pdfToolbox 4 has been enthusiastically received after its launch at drupa 2008 and has already proven its value in providing an extremely simple way to deal with relatively complex PDF manipulations. Scheduled for release by mid October, the new version of pdfToolbox 4 includes the new metadata capabilities, offering users very practical ways to extend their production automation, administration capabilities with their PDF workflow or to simply enrich the experience of viewing PDF files.

Exploring the data
The new callas pdfToolbox 4 feature allows to explore and export the XMP information that is embedded in the PDF file to a fully configurable report in XML or tab delimited format. The data linked to the document as well as to the individual images inside the PDF can be retrieved. Through an intuitive interface, the metadata can easily be navigated, filtered or grouped. By combining XMP metadata with data about the placement of images, XMP metadata are turned into even more useful information.
Supports all major XMP standards, including IPTC, EXIF, AdsML, PLUS Picture Licensing Universal System, Medibel+/GWG AdTicket, PDF/A, Creative Commons, PRISM and Camera Raw.

A path to revolution in PDF
“This new feature will change the way we look at metadata management because of the possibilities it offers,” says Olaf Drümmer, Managing Director of callas software. One example is the accounting for licensing rights in books and other publications, which currently is a nightmare for many publishers. In many cases over 50 percent of the images that are published never get paid for, mainly because no reporting is done. callas software provides tools to extract metadata information of all images actually used, so that they can be imported into a billing system. callas software thinks about many other applications: GPS coordinates allowing to go to Google maps, ISBN numbers allowing to connect to Amazon or finding more info on the author by linking to his website, or intelligent archiving are just some ideas. “We will develop new views and extend the potential offered by extracting and using the content of PDFs ,”states Olaf Drümmer, “I invite everybody to join us.”
